The complexity of the characters in this book vary slightly
between characters with some similarities. Einar wants his family to be well
and to have success up north in order to provide for his family. Sig only
wished for his father to not be dead and to survive Wolffs rath towards him and
his sister. Anna wants her mother to be well and to also to not die at the
hands of Wolff. Wolff wants his old and he will kill to get it. Nadya and Maria
just wish for their family to survive.
Some
themes that begin to develop are faith which is woven into the story throughout
the entire plot. The belief in the bible and faith in god keeps them going.
Another theme is wealth, this is relevant throughout the story. The whole novel
revolves around wealth because of the stolen gold and that is what drives the
plot. Lastly another theme is violence, Wolff single handedly drives this theme
into the story by confronting the Andersson family. The book is structured into
parts with flashbacks. Each part connects to the others by giving bits of
information which foreshadow things to come ten years into the future.
